Halifax Central Library

So beautifully Kubrickian, I want to rent a place and see it on the side…

That beautiful Dr.Strangelove style war room suspended over the plaza filled with black monolith shelving is where you’ll find mystery, science fiction and fantasy books. It’s downright dreamy.

Now this is a proper library reading room with a view, stunning. Imagine how beautiful this room must be on a quiet snowy evening? Did I mention that the entire library is peppered with charging outlets? Swoon.

The black monolith shelving is not the only Kubrickian touch. Three versions of this bright orange chair are found on every floor, one has a “leg up” armrest for corner slouching, another has a laptop armrest. Before you turn into Jack Torrance during a winter of all work and no play, you can use the SAD light therapy desk. Yes, it’s free and it’ll keep you sane.

There’s an outdoor rooftop patio and café (now a sunny pandemic era lunch room) with gorgeous views of the harbour. At the plaza end of the library the people-watching on Spring Garden road is as therapeutic as the SAD light and wonderfully entertaining. (This was the view from my chair.)

Masks are required indoors during the pandemic. You can only remove them temporarily to eat or drink. It’s a small price to pay for everything this library has to offer. I’ve still only scratched the surface.
