Be Scared of Everything by Halifax’s Peter Counter is a perfect read for the emotionally disemboweled reader looking to escape the trappings of this season. I enjoyed how he writes about Alien. Counter’s writing is crisp, intelligent and insightful. Already his game reviews stand out as detailed yet clear and thoughtful examinations of the play experience (tougher than it looks). I respect this. In this book I find even more reason to appreciate his earnest voice. There’s nothing self-indulgent here. It’s a personal and at times poignant but also copacetic survey of horror in popular media. The books feels as if a friend with whom you share many interests has written it simply to amuse you. It’s a very pleasant read, a gem of a little spooky blue book. He could publish a dozen of these, I’d read them all.
